Insidermedicine in 60 - August 6, 2007
August 6, 2007 (Insidermedicine)
From London,
British authorities are scrambling to deal with an outbreak of foot-and mouth disease in cattle. The European Union has imposed a ban on British exports. The outbreak appears to be related to a stain of the virus that hasn’t been seen for decades, but is used in a government-approved vaccine. The vaccine is manufactured only 4 miles from the location of the outbreak, bringing into question the safety practiced at the site of manufacturing.
From Maryland,
The FDA and Canada’s Food Inspection Agency are warning about the risk of botulism in French Style Green Beans made by Lakeside Foods. While no cases of botulism have yet to occur, some cans were noted to have leaks and be underprocessed on a routine inspection.
From San Diego,
It is not bacteria but an abnormal protein that causes acne rosacea- or so-called “adult acne”. Researchers noted abnormally high levels of the protetin, cathelicidin, in those with the condition. In addition, they had high levels of a protein that converts its inactive form to its active form. Expect the development of new treatments for rosacea.
And finally from Hong Kong,
Add mahjong to the list of epilepsy triggers. Researchers report on 23 people who had epileptic seizures while playing or watching the cognitively demanding game. Most never had seizures other than when playing the game.
For Insidermedicine in 60, I’m Dr. Susan Sharma.
